why is sunscreen so important?

With summer here and the urge to be out in the sun more, here is your reminder on why it’s so important to wear sunscreen.

Sunscreen is important for several reasons:

  1. Protection from harmful UV radiation: Sunscreen helps protect your skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is emitted by the sun. UV radiation is classified into UVA and UVB rays, both of which can cause damage to the skin. UVA rays can penetrate deep into the skin and contribute to premature aging, wrinkles, and skin cancer, while UVB rays primarily affect the outer layers of the skin, causing sunburns and increasing the risk of skin cancer. Sunscreen with a broad-spectrum SPF (Sun Protection Factor) helps shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

  2. Prevention of sunburns: Sunburns are not only painful but also a sign of skin damage. Sunscreen acts as a barrier on the skin, reflecting or absorbing UV radiation and preventing it from penetrating into the deeper layers. Applying sunscreen regularly can help minimize the risk of sunburn and the associated discomfort.

  3. Reduced risk of skin cancer: Prolonged and unprotected exposure to UV radiation is a major risk factor for skin cancer. Regular use of sunscreen, along with other sun-protective measures like seeking shade and wearing protective clothing, can significantly reduce the risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer.

  4. Prevention of premature aging: UV radiation is one of the primary causes of premature aging of the skin. It can lead to the development of wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, and a loss of skin elasticity. By applying sunscreen daily, you can help prevent photoaging and keep your skin looking youthful and healthy.

  5. Maintenance of overall skin health: Sunscreen not only protects against UV radiation but also helps maintain the overall health of your skin. It reduces the risk of sun-related skin problems like dryness, redness, and irritation. Additionally, some sunscreens contain ingredients that provide additional benefits such as moisturization, antioxidants, and soothing properties.

It's important to note that sunscreen should be used in conjunction with other sun-protective measures, such as seeking shade, wearing protective clothing (including hats and sunglasses), and avoiding sun exposure during peak hours (generally between 10 am and 4 pm). Sunscreen should be applied generously and reapplied every two hours or more frequently if swimming or sweating excessively.
