What it looks like in my kitchen after a weekend of doing makeup…. clean, clean and more clean.
To clean my brushes I use dish soap, baby shampoo or other shampoos I get sick of. I gently hold my soap in my left hand while the water lightly runs. Then I take the brush head and get it wet, doing my best to avoid soaking the metal ferrul. After it’s dampened I massage it into my hand with the soap. I keep water running over the brush head, while it’s pointed down, until the water runs clean and without soap bubbles.
Then I squeeze them out with paper towels and lay them flat to dry. I do this after every weekend to avoid build up from quick change and solid brush cleaners.

What’s your favorite brush and why? I can’t live without my flat top foundation brush. It’s the best brush for achieving an airbrushed finish with a cream or liquid foundation. It also has the most bristles of any brush at over 10,000 so requires half the amount of foundation you’d normally use. My favorite of the flat top brushes is the @itcosmetics one pictured here (left). It can also be used with foundation powder for a fuller coverage. Photo by Diane Chappell @chappellstudiosportraits

I’m so honored to be a part of such an amazing production. My friend Meg is producing and directing a play based off the book, “For colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf”
By Ntozake Shange. My friend Cyndi Robinson of Cheek by Rez cosmetics will be their Makeup Artist and I’ll be representing Fifi’s with Costume Design and Wardrobe 🙂
From the Desk of Meg Affonso…..
I wanted to tell you about a wonderful event & production that is in development, as well as update our loyal supporters of the project! Please read the entire email for all of the information and important details.
Lotus & Bamboo Productions + Albany Barn are proud to present the production of Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf & The Women of Color in the Arts Expo! On September 27th we will be debuting the SHOW ONLY at 6 p.m. On September 28th & 29th doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the show will begin at 6 p.m. The Expo will immediately follow the production on September 28th & 29th. You will be able to mingle, enjoy art in all forms and shop a variety of artistic items + pieces.
This project has been on my heart for 9 years and has been in development since February of this year. I am thrilled to be working with Jammella Anderson to coordinate the Expo & incredibly grateful to Albany Barn for collaborating on this with me!
The Expo on Friday, September 28th will feature live music by Audrey Zaccarya & Sibie LaVoz, spoken word by D. Colin, an art exhibit + sale with work from Takeyce Walter, Danielle Colin, Anusha Sekhar + Paula Frazzle, vendors, light passed hors d’eouvres by 677 Prime, plus Beer + Wine cash bar by Umana Restaurant & Wine Bar.
The Expo on Saturday, September 29th will feature DJ Poetik Selektions, moving art by Victoria Rutledge with live drumming, vendors, women of color in food showcase & sampling, plus a Beer + Wine cash bar by Umana Restaurant & Wine Bar.
On both evenings we will be having silent auctions to support local organizations that support women.
In addition to the dates listed above, we will also be at Umana Restaurant and Wine Bar on August 21st at 7 p.m. for a selected staged reading, the Emerging Choreographers Project September 21st – 23rd to perform original choreography at Albany Center Gallery, and SUNY Albany Dept of Women’s and Gender Studies on September 21st at 12 pm for a full staged reading.
“for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf is Ntozake Shange’s first work and most acclaimed theater piece. It consists of a series of poetic monologues to be accompanied by dance movements and music, a form Shange coined as the choreopoem. for colored girls… tells the stories of seven women who have suffered oppression in a racist and sexist society. As a choreopoem, the piece is a series of 20 separate poems choreographed to music that weaves interconnected stories of love, empowerment, struggle and loss into a complex representation of sisterhood. The cast consists of seven nameless African-American women only identified by the colors they are assigned. They are the lady in red, lady in orange, lady in yellow, lady in green, lady in blue, lady in brown, and lady in purple. Subjects from rape, abandonment, abortion and domestic violence are tackled.” (via Wikipedia)
As much as I want everyone to attend the show, I also want to be very clear about the triggers involved in the show that will be heightened by the particular way that we are performing it. We are doing the production in a contemporary & immersive style of theatre to create multi-sensory elements via light, movement, sound, proximity and the use of a shadow screen. The show does contain strong language & light sexual simulation. It is not suggested to bring children who are younger than 18 years of age, unless it’s a teenager who is with a consenting adult.
This is incredibly important work and I hope that you will join us!
I encourage you to get your tickets, soon. We will only be selling a limited number on each night due to space. I won’t be able to ‘get you in’ if we sell out. Share with your friends and the people who you know that love art, women & could benefit from this message (which is ALL OF US!).

Since 1995 I’ve been painting #eyebrows on faces, over 12,000 as a matter of fact. Fast forward to 2018 I’ve just been certified in Microblading. I’ll be sketching about 10 sets a day, and practicing microblading strokes in addition to that over the next month while I finish doing what needs to be done in the studio to be able to do this service.
I’ve always said if I had to pick one thing to do all day it would be eyebrows. They have the most power above everything else. It can age you, sicken you, masculinize you/feminize you, and so much more. The power of #microblading is unreal and I’m so excited to get started on this journey.
Pictured above is my friend JC who was my model for my class. She wanted a fuller brow and to be freed from having to draw her brows on every day.
A microblading section is being developed on the website now, so a lot of information will be available soon as to what microblading is, before and after care, FAQ’s, etc..
